<p>Durango Dance provides students with an exciting performance experience through our annual spring recital. This year’s show, “A Day in the Park,” is a chance for students to shine in front of family and friends, showcasing the results of their year of dedication, hard work, and growth.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The journey from class, to rehearsal, to performance is a tremendous opportunity for learning and fun. Through this process children expand their abilities as dancers and performers. They also gain confidence, retention skills, a deep understanding and appreciation of teamwork, and new friendships. These are things the students carry with them &#8211; out of the studio, off of the stage, and into the rest of their world. Our goal in presenting an annual professionally directed recital is to provide an enjoyable experience that enriches the dancing and the lives of our students and their families.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We have created this recital handbook in an effort to clarify the procedures, commitments, and responsibilities that are necessary to make “A Day in the Park” a memorable and enjoyable experience for all. Please read through it thoroughly to help us in our goal of making the recital an organized, exciting experience for everyone involved.</p>

<p><strong>STAYING INFORMED</strong></p>
<p>We work hard to make sure the dance experience is organized and fun. Keeping you informed is one of our primary goals. <p><strong>PART 2: COSTUMES</strong></p>
<p>We spend many hours selecting the costumes for each class. They are always age &#8211; appropriate and of the highest quality possible. Costumes include all accessories (hats, gloves, etc.), but not tights or shoes.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><em>NOTE: No jewelry or underwear is to be worn with costumes. This includes during dress rehearsals and photos. Students should not chew gum while in costume.</em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em>NOTE: To ensure that there are no costume problems, students should not wear their costumes outside of recital related activities.</em></strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Distribution</strong></p>
<p>Costumes will be distributed the week of April 30th &#8211; May 4th. Students who have outstanding balances will not receive costumes. If you are unsure of your account balance, please contact the office ASAP at 970-749-9881. Please try on all costumes and accessories as soon as you bring them home. This allows you to account for all accessories and determine whether alterations are needed. Doing this in advance will minimize stress during recital time.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Alterations</strong></p>
<p>Alterations are sometimes needed and are the responsibility of the student’s parent or guardian. If you need professional alterations here are a couple places to start:</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Costume Care</strong></p>
<p>We recommend that you label all costumes, shoes, accessories, and tights with your child’s name. Accessories can be packed in a clear plastic bag, also labeled with your child’s name. Please do not wash costumes in your washing machine; dry clean them only (after the recital).</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Remove any tags that could hang out of the costume.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If costume straps do not have snaps or are not attached, please sew them prior to picture day. Never cross the straps unless specified by the teacher.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Many costumes come with headpieces, hats, or other accessories. Teachers will determine how these are to be worn on photo day.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Costumes With Fringe</strong></p>
<p>You will notice a string at the bottom of most fringe skirts or trim, which is to keep the fringe from getting tangled. Please do not pull the string until picture day. After that date, please place fringed items on hangers to keep them from getting tangled.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Ironing</strong></p>
<p>We do not recommend using a traditional iron when pressing costumes. Silks can burn, sequins can melt, and fabric colors may change. Please use only a steam iron, and do so with caution.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Tutu Maintenance</strong></p>
<p>Grasp the waist and give it a gentle shake, then use your fingers to “comb” out any pieces of tulle that are wrinkled. To store a tutu, put it on a hanger upside down. To help remove persistent wrinkles, hang the tutu in the bathroom during a shower or use a handheld steamer.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Quick Costume Change</strong></p>
<p>During the recital, some students may have quick costume changes. These students are to keep their costume and accessories in the quick change area located in the dressing room directly off of the stage. A special team of moms will assist these students during their quick change. If your student has a quick change we will notify them/you personally by note with detailed instructions. These notes will be handed out as the recital approaches.</p>

<p><strong>PART 3:</strong> <strong>TIGHTS, SHOES, HAIR, AND MAKEUP</strong></p>
<p><strong>Tights</strong></p>
<p>Female students need to wear the shoes and color tights listed below, unless otherwise directed. If you are unsure make sure to ask your child’s teacher. <p><strong>Hair </strong></p>
<p>Ballet students are required to wear their hair back in a bun. Students in other styles of dance are asked to wear their hair pulled back in a tight middle ponytail or bun. Dancers with short hair are asked to pull their hair away from their face.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Makeup</strong></p>
<p>All female students are asked to wear light makeup for the recital: lipstick, blush, eye shadow, and mascara. A little blush works well for boys.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>PART 4: BE PREPARED</strong></p>
<p><strong>Supplies for the Recital</strong></p>
<p>We advise you to gather all costumes, accessories, shoes, and makeup in advance so you will know if something is missing or isn’t right. Make sure you have all of your supplies before going to the theatre.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Please do not send your child to the dress rehearsal or recital with snacks or beverages that could stain their costumes. Crackers, energy bars, apples, carrots, and string cheese are some examples of good snack choices. Water is the only beverage children may have while in costume.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Other items that may come in handy are: cleaning wipes, face cleaning wipes, safety pins, and bobby pins. You may also include some things for your child to do backstage &#8211; games, art, etc. (no markers or pens please. Crayons are best).</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>PART 5: REHEARSALS</strong></p>
<p><strong>Run Through Rehearsal</strong></p>
<p>Run through rehearsal will be held Durango Dance on Sunday, May 6th, from 1:00 &#8211; 4:00 pm. We will run through the show from beginning to end in Studio 1 (show order is listed in the chart below). Students will wait for their turn in the lobby and in Studio 3. Students do not need to wear costumes for this run through. Families are welcome to watch from the windows on Main Street. When students are finished running their dance(s) they may leave or join their families to watch.</p>

<p><strong>Dress Rehearsals</strong></p>
<p><strong>Dress Rehearsal is mandatory for all students.</strong> Dress rehearsal will take place on Friday, May 11th, from 5:00 &#8211; 7:30 pm at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. It is extremely important for students to attend so that they know how to enter/exit the stage, and where they need to be on the stage during their dance. It also gives them the opportunity to get used to their costumes, lighting, and loud music.  Parents are to bring students dressed in their first costume into the auditorium where they will sit with their class (look for the sign with their class on it). If your child performs in multiple dances, have them dressed in the costume of their first piece, and sit with that class. Students are welcome to leave after they have practiced their dance(s) on stage. If your child is performing in the finale dance, then they must stay until the end to practice.</p>
<p><strong>PART 6: RECITAL</strong></p>
<p><strong>Performances</strong></p>
<p>There are two performances of “A Day In The Park.” Both performances include all dances and are therefore mandatory for all students.</p>
<p>Saturday, May 12th Dancers in dressing rooms 5:30 pm Show 6:30 pm</p>
<p>Sunday, May 13th Dancers in dressing rooms 1:00 pm Show 2:00 pm</p>

<p><strong>Drop Off/Pick Up</strong></p>
<p>We ask that all parents and students enter the Concert Hall through the main entrance and lobby. In the lobby there will be a list of dressing room assignments. Parents or guardians should bring children to their assigned dressing room at 5:30 pm on Saturday, May 12th and at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 13th. Posted next to your child’s dressing room door is the sign in/out sheet. Please bring your child dressed in their first costume, sign them in, and leave them in the care of the class mom(s). All students will be under the supervision of responsible adults who will stay with them in the room for the duration of the show. At the end of the show you can return to your child’s dressing room to pick them up, gather their items, and sign them out.</p>

<p><strong>PART 7: PHOTOS, VIDEO, AND DURANGO DANCE APPAREL </strong></p>
<p><strong>Photos</strong></p>
<p>Class photos are the week of May 7th &#8211; 11th and  will be taken during your child’s regularly scheduled class day and time at Durango Dance. Students will meet in their usual studio to get in costume and to practice their dance. If your student is in a Friday class, please see the schedule on the following page as they will not meet during their regular class time. This is also when teachers will inform students how to wear any accessories. Students’ hair is to be pulled back, and light makeup is recommended.</p>
